Harnessing Host Defenses to HIV

ثبت نشده
چکیده

The battle against HIV is beingwaged onmany fronts, fromprevention efforts to the development of new antiviral therapies. Although the body’s immune system is ultimately overcome if an infection is left untreated, there are numerous lines of host defense that, when augmented, could counter HIV’s relentless assault. This Select highlights recent advances in understanding the interplay between HIV and host cells.

Role of Cytokines and Chemokines in HIV Infection

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Blood monocytes and resident macrophages are important in vivo cell targets for HIV infection and their role in AIDS pathogenesis are well documented. These cells of innate immune defenses usually survive HIV infection, serve as a major virus reservoir, and function as immunoregulatory cells through se...

Advances in basic science.

Basic science continues to occupy a substantial portion of the program at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections. At the 17th conference this year, presentations focused on advances in our understanding of cellular factors that regulate the interplay between the virus and the host cell and, in particular, cellular defenses such as tetherin (or BST-2) that antagonize viral r...

Safeguard against DNA sensing: the role of TREX1 in HIV-1 infection and autoimmune diseases

Innate immune recognition is crucial for host responses against viral infections, including infection by human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1). Human cells detect such invading pathogens with a collection of pattern recognition receptors that activate the production of antiviral proteins, such as the cytokine interferon-type I, to initiate antiviral responses immediately as well as the adaptiv...

The Envelope Gene of Transmitted HIV-1 Resists a Late Interferon Gamma-Induced Block

Type I interferon (IFN) signaling engenders an antiviral state that likely plays an important role in constraining HIV-1 transmission and contributes to defining subsequent AIDS pathogenesis. Type II IFN (IFN-γ) also induces an antiviral state but is often primarily considered to be an immunomodulatory cytokine. We report that IFN-γ stimulation can induce an antiviral state that can be both dis...

Opening the HIV Mystery Box

Nearly 36 million people live with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Despite incredible advances in combined antiretroviral therapy, the hopes for a definitive cure and an effective vaccine have been frustrated by the seemingly endless capacity of the virus to subvert the host defenses, to persist in a latent state, and to resist drug interventions. Recent work, however, sheds new light o...
